Bears Edged By Utes

Utah Pulls Away Late To Defeat Cal In School Haas Rock Game

BERKELEY – Senior Sara Anastasieska scored 22 points and center Chen Yue matched a career-high with 10 rebounds but the Cal women's basketball team fell to Utah 71-62 for the program's annual School Haas Rock game on Friday at Haas Pavilion.

The Bears hosted nearly 4,500 elementary and middle school-aged children as part of the team's annual event that incorporates educational components into the game day experience – with this year's focus on STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. The youth from all over the Bay Area saw a competitive game until the Utes pulled away in the final three minutes.

Junior Alaysia Styles added 11 points and six rebounds while freshman Leilani McIntosh had four rebounds, four assists and three steals in 24 minutes.

It marked Anastasieska's second 20-point performance of the season. She was 4-for-10 from 3-point range and is 7-for-18 in her past two games after going 2-for-24 from beyond the arc in her previous 10 contests.

"It was nice to see the ball go in the basket but at the same time all we want is a win," Anastasieska said.

Despite a sluggish first quarter that saw the Bears (8-10, 0-7 Pac-12) shoot just 18.8 percent from the field with six turnovers, they only trailed 17-14 heading into the second. Cal then proceeded to go in front 38-32 after a pair of free throws by senior Jaeyln Brown with 6:43 left in the third quarter.

The Bears still held a 46-42 advantage at the 2:11 mark of the third, but Utah scored eight unanswered points to go in front by four early in the fourth. After falling behind 56-51 with 7:45 to play, Cal came back to take a 59-58 lead at the 6:40 mark on a 3-pointer by Anastasieska.

The Utes then held the Bears scoreless for nearly six minutes to pull away for the victory.

"That was a tough one," Cal head coach Charmin Smith said. "There were momentum swings happening back and forth, and we just got caught on the wrong side of the last one. We want to get a win in conference play, but it wasn't meant to be today."

The Bears return to the Haas Pavilion floor Sunday at Noon for a Pac-12 showdown against Colorado. The game will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
