BERKELEY – The Cal women's basketball team could not complete the fourth-quarter comeback on Sunday, falling to Colorado, 62-50 at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears (8-11, 0-8 Pac-12) cut an 11-point second-half deficit to four, but were unable to draw any closer to the visiting Buffs (14-5, 3-5 Pac-12). Colorado outscored Cal, 15-7, in the fourth quarter to come away with the road victory.
"We gave ourselves some opportunities, but we came out flat to start the second half," said Cal head coach
Charmin Smith. "We dug ourselves into a hole and it's just really tough in this conference when you do that. We were just never able to get back in control after that."
Senior
Jaelyn Brown led the Bears with 12 points and freshman forward
Evelien Lutje Schipholt added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds on the afternoon.
Colorado's Emma Clarke led all scorers with 14 points, going 5-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-7 from three-point range.
With both teams looking to bounce back from narrow defeats on Friday, Colorado jumped out to a 5-0 lead. However, the Bears quickly found their offensive flow, shooting 50 percent (9-18) from the floor in the opening quarter and going 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Cal's freshman quartet of
Leilani McIntosh,
Cailyn Crocker,
Jazlen Green, and Lutje Schipholt led the way in the first quarter, combining for 16 of Cal's 20 points in the opening frame.
Tied 30-30 at the half, Colorado gained separation with a 13-0 run early in the third quarter. But the Bears battled back and cut the deficit to four as Lutje Schipholt beat the buzzer to close the third. Lutje Schipholt, who went scoreless in Friday's loss to Utah, finished in double-figures for the fifth time this season and second time in Pac-12 play.
However, Cal was unable to execute down the stretch, committing five turnovers and going 1-for-13 from the floor during the fourth quarter. The Bears finished the game shooting 36 percent (21-59) from the floor and 11 percent (2-18) from beyond the arc, missing their final 15 three-point attempts on the night.
Colorado went 5-for-19 (26 percent) from three on the day. The Buffs were also dominant on the boards, outrebounding Cal, 47-30, and holding a 20-11 advantage in offensive rebounds.
The Bears will be in action on the road next weekend, completing their regular season series against the Washington schools. Cal opens the weekend at Washington State, tipping off at 7 p.m. PT Friday against the Cougars (9-11, 2-6 Pac-12).
