Johnson's School Record Highlights Track & Field Opening Weekend
McKay Johnson Sets Top Men's Shot Put Mark In Country.
ALBUQUERQUE – California track & field got the indoor season off to a strong start, led by a new school record and top mark in the country in the men's shot put from redshirt-junior
McKay Johnson.
Johnson surpassed his own indoor school record he set a year ago with a throw of 20.63 meters (67-8.25) to take the shot put win at the New Mexico Team Open.
Splitting the squad between the New Mexico Team Open and the UW Invitational in Seattle, the Bears collected 12 new personal bests over the weekend.
Throws teammate, junior
Joshua Johnson, set a new personal record of his own in the men's shot put. He recorded a top throw of 19.39 meters (63-7.50) to take third in the event a post a top-15 mark in the country to this point in the season. Johnson's mark is the second-best in Cal indoor history. The Bears got their third all-time top-5 school mark of the day when junior
Iffy Joyner recorded a top throw of 18.71 meters (61-4.75) to takeover the fifth-best mark in Cal indoor history.
In the sprints, senior
Jasher Foster took third in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.92 seconds, while senior Zion Corrales-Nelson (24.34) and junior
Deshae Wise (24.62) both recorded personal bests to take fifth and seventh, respectively, in the women's 200-meter dash.
Nelson recorded her second personal best of the day in the women's 60-meter dash prelims with a time of 7.54 seconds and teammate
Sara East also set a personal record with a time of 7.58 in the event.
In the mid-distances, graduate senior
Emma Lower finished second in the women's 600-meter run with a time of 1:33.82 and crossed the line in 2:15.51 to grab third-place in the women's 800-meter race. Sophomore's
Adam Saleh (48.54) and Nico Bland (48.56) both notched new personal bests in the men's 400-meter race.
Junior
Jared Geredes recorded a best leap of 7.31 meters (23-11.75) to set a new personal record and finish second among collegians in the men's long jump competition.
The Bears sent multi-event/vertical jumpers and distance runners to Seattle for the UW Invitational.
The women's distance medley relay team of junior
Mina Anglero, freshman
Lara Tortell, redshirt senior
Jordyn Colter and junior
Annie Boos posted the top time of the day on Friday, and 11
th-best time in the country, crossing the line in 11:39.64.
Sophomore
Hakim McMorris opened his first heptathlon competition with two event wins on Friday with a time of 7.00 seconds in the 60-meter dash and a top throw of 13.95 meters in the shot put. He concluded Saturday's action with a total of 4,620 points.
In the mid-distances, sophomore
Moises Medrano set a new personal best in the men's 800-meters with a time of 1:53.82, while
Jordyn Colter recorded a new personal record in the women's 800-meters, finishing in 2:07.90.
Finishing off the weekend, Boos set a personal best of her own with a time of 9:33.59 in the women's 3,000-meters.
Up Next: The Bears return to action Feb. 13-15 at the Don Kirby Elite Meet in Albuquerque and the Husky Classic in Seattle.
