BOULDER, Colo. - The Cal women's basketball team fell short on Friday night, falling to Colorado 64-57 at the CU Events Center in the opening game of its Rocky Mountain road trip. The Golden Bears (9-15, 1-12 Pac-12) trailed by as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter, but cut the deficit to five with 49 seconds to play. However, the Buffaloes (15-9, 4-9 Pac-12) closed the game down the stretch to secure the season sweep of the Bears.
Cal's
Jaelyn Brown led all scorers with 13 points, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter. Brown went 3-8 from the floor and 5-5 from the foul line over the final 10 minutes, scoring in double-figures for the fourth consecutive game. Classmate
CJ West added 11 points for the Bears, going 5-6 from the floor.
Four players scored in double-figures for the Buffs, led by 12 points off the bench from Aubrey Knight. Mya Hollingshed added 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Buffs, who outscored the Bears 34-24 in the paint and held a 10-3 advantage in second chance points.
Coming off an overtime loss to No. 10 UCLA the last time out, Cal held the Buffs scoreless for the first 4:12 of the game. Yet points were at a premium on both ends, as the teams combined for 20 points in the first quarter.
Colorado closed the first quarter on a 8-0 run, but the Bears turned the tide in the second quarter, and reclaimed the lead with a 13-3 run. Styles, who was held to just two points in the first meeting with the Buffs this season, keyed the Cal comeback and scored six of her eight points in the second quarter. However, Colorado closed the half on a 5-0 run to take a 27-23 lead into the locker room. The Bears shot just 29 percent (8-28) from the floor in the opening half, including a 2-14 performance from the floor in the first quarter.
The teams traded buckets in the early stages of the second half before the Buffs went on a 9-2 run to take a nine-point lead. The Bears cut the gap to five after back-to-back scores in the paint by West and Brown, but a 9-2 run returned the cushion for Colorado.
Trailing 42-35 entering the four, Brown powered the Bears down the stretch. Brown scored or assisted on 14 of Cal's 22 points in the fourth quarter, which saw the visiting Bears get within five after a steal and layup by freshman
Cailyn Crocker. However, Colorado held on down the stretch to drop the Bears to 2-7 on the road this season. Â
Cal continues its Rocky Mountain road trip on Sunday, taking on Utah (12-12, 5-8 Pac-12) at 11 a.m. PT. Utah won the first matchup between the teams in Berkeley, 71-62, and has won the last three meetings between the teams in Salt Lake City. The Utes are coming off a 97-64 loss to No. 8 Stanford on Friday night.
