Bears Beat Saint Mary's, 5-2

Cal Posted Three Runs In The First Inning

FRESNO, Calif. - The California softball team wasted no time getting on the board in its second meeting of the weekend against Saint Mary's on Saturday in the Fresno State Kickoff Invitational from Margie Wright Diamond. The Golden Bears put up three runs in the first inning en route to a 5-2 victory over the Gaels.

Cal improved to 6-2 on the year, and the Bears extended their winning streak to five games.

Bradley extended her season-opening hitting streak to eight games in the bottom of the first. Following a double by Kennedy Thomas, Makena Smith singled home Bradley for the game's first run. After Cameron Kondo walked to load the bases, Mikayla Coelho singled home two Bears to put Cal up, 3-0.

Saint Mary's scored its runs against Cal in the third. After an error by Chloe Romero put runners at the corners with one out, a single drove home a run for the Gaels. SMC added another run later in the inning on a sac fly to cut Cal's lead down to 3-2.

Cal put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth that started with back-to-back walks. Candace Yingling and Lauren Espalin then ripped back-to-back RBI singles to give the Bears a couple insurance runs, increasing the lead to 5-2.

Yingling went 2-for-2 after entering halfway through the game. Bradley and Smith also collected two hits.

Romero went the distance, picking up another complete game. She allowed two runs, one earned, eight hits, one walk and she struck out one Gael.

The game ended with an interesting double play. With one runner on, Saint Mary's ripped a double, but the Bears tagged the runner out at home and then caught the other runner in a run down to end the game with their third double play of the game.

The Bears play game two of Saturday's doubleheader tonight at 7:30 pm against host Fresno State. Cal concludes its time in Fresno Sunday at 11:30 am against Cal Poly.
