Bears Stumble In Santa Barbara

Cal’s Road Swing Ends With Loss At UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – California squandered an early four-run lead and fell to UC Santa Barbara, 17-7, on Monday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

Playing their fourth game in as many days to open the season, the Bears (1-3) surrendered 15 runs over a three-inning span to the host Gauchos (3-1). Quentin Selma (2-for-4, five RBI) provided early firepower for Cal's offense with a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning, but the Bears' bats went quiet shortly after. UC Santa Barbara's rally was sparked with a three-run fourth frame and followed by an eight-spot in the fifth.

The Bears' first four trips to the plate were promising, as they strung together nine hits, including two apiece for Selma and Darren Baker. A RBI single by Selma in the first inning plated Darren Baker from second base after the latter singled and swiped his first bag of the year.

In his first career at bat, Jake Skipworth doubled home Nathan Martorella for Cal's final run in the ninth.

Cal starter Josh White went 3.1 innings in his collegiate debut and retired the first seven batters he faced before getting chase in the fourth frame. Seven total pitchers saw action on the mound for the Bears.
