Bears Edged By Titans, 4-3

The Bears Opened Play At The Judi Garman Classic

FULLERTON, Calif. - Candace Yingling belted her second home run of the year, but the California softball team fell to Cal State Fullerton, 4-3, Thursday night at the Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field on the Fullerton campus.

The Golden Bears took an early 2-0 lead, but a three-run fourth inning gave Fullerton all the momentum.

Cal fell to 9-7 on the year.

Yingling opened the scoring when she blasted her roundtripper in the second inning to put Cal up, 1-0.

In the third inning, Cal loaded the bases after Makena Smith doubled, Mikayla Coelho singled and Kacey Zobac walked. Smith and Coelho both extended their hitting streaks - 12 games for Coelho and 11 games for Smith.

Cal added to its lead in the top of the fourth. After Aleia Agbayani and Amani Bradley walked with two outs, Lauren Espalin smashed one to the wall that sent Agbayani home. Bradley was tagged out at the plate also trying to score.

The Titans took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when they plated three, starting with a solo home run. A couple of singles and an error allowed the game-tying run to come home. A two-out single to left gave Cal State Fullerton the lead when the play at the plate was ruled catcher's obstruction.

Cal State Fullerton added an insurance run in the fifth inning after stringing together a couple of singles.

The Bears went down fighting. In the seventh inning and two on with one out, Coelho knocked one off the pitcher's glove that deflected into right field to send home pinch runner Nicole Hammoude and cut the Titan lead down to 4-3, but that was all the Bears could muster in the final frame.

The Bears return to Anderson Family Field Friday at 9:00 a.m. against No. 4 LSU.
