Geredes, Corrales-Nelson Pace Bears On First Day Of MPSF Championships
Bears Collect 11 Personal Bests On Day One.
SEATTLE – California track & field was led by a third-place finish in the women's 200-meter dash from Zion Corrales-Nelson and a fourth-place finish in the men's long jump from
Jared Geredes on the first day of the MPSF Championships Friday at Dempsey Indoor.
Geredes leaped to a new personal-best of 7.57 meters (24-10), the fifth-best indoor mark all-time at Cal, while Corrales-Nelson crossed the line in an indoor personal-record time of 23.90 seconds.
The Bears turned in a total of 11 new personal records on the first day of competition, with three athletes earning a pair each in sprinters Corrales-Nelson,
Kennedy Williams and
Ezinne Abba.
Cal had three women in the top 11 of the women's 200-meters as Williams ran a lifetime-best time of 24.42 to take seventh-place and
Ezinne Abba clocked a personal record time of 24.62 seconds to grab 11th-place. Two more Bears made it five in the top 15, with
Maisie Stevens (24.94) and
Sara East (24.96) taking 14th and 15th, respectively.
Hakim McMorris opened the heptathlon competition by running a new personal-best, blazing across the finish line in 6.93 seconds to take the event win and grab 907 points. He followed with a best leap of 7.15 meters in the long jump to maintain his overall lead after the first two events with 1,757 points.
The third event of the day was the shot put, where McMorris posted a top throw of 12.90 meters to finish fifth in the event and total 2,418 points through the first three events. Wrapping up the day in the high jump, McMorris cleared a top height of 1.90 meters to tie for sixth. He has 3,132 points through the first four events to sit in third place overall with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run to go on Saturday.
The Bears advanced a pair of sprinters to Saturday's 60-meter hurdle finals after they posted top eight times in the prelims.
Jasher Foster crossed the line in 7.95 seconds to enter Saturday with the fourth-fastest men's time, while
Deshae Wise clocked 8.40 seconds in the women's race, just two-hundredths off a new personal record for the seventh-fastest of the day.
Corrales-Nelson sped to a new personal record in the women's 60-meter dash prelims, clocking 7.48 seconds to just miss out on advancing to Saturday's final in ninth place. Abba turned in a huge personal-best of a tenth of a second, also crossing the line in 7.48 seconds to tie for ninth with Corrales-Nelson.
Action concludes Saturday at the MPSF Championships, beginning with the women's high jump final at 10:00 a.m. PST. The meet is stream on FloTrack for a subscription fee.
