FORT WORTH, Texas –
Grant Holman struck out seven batters over a career-high 6.2 innings pitched but California could not back him with any run support in a 3-0 loss to No. 21 TCU at Lupton Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears (3-7) saw just one baserunner reach third base as they dropped their second straight contest to the Horned Frogs (9-1). Cal mustered six hits throughout the game but went 1-for-12 with runners on base.
TCU plated two runs in the bottom of the second inning on a single up the middle by Tommy Sacco. An RBI triple in the fifth made it a three-run game and proved to be the final run between both teams. Despite the three runs allowed, Holman was effective over 6.2 frames, working around five hits while allowing one walk. His seven strikeouts were a career-high as well.
Cal's best offensive chance came in the seventh when
Brandon McIlwain and
Dylan Beavers tallied consecutive singles to open the inning. McIlwain moved to third base on a lineout to right field by
John Lagattuta, but the threat was quelled when pinch hitter
Nathan Manning lined into a double play up the middle.
Jack Wolger and
Carson Olson combined for 1.1 innings of scoreless relief on the mound.
