Series-Ending Loss

Bears Return To Berkeley With 6-1 Loss To TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas – A quiet day at the plate and four defensive errors by California led to a 6-1 loss to No. 21 TCU in the series finale at Lupton Stadium on Sunday.

The Bears (3-8) never held a lead as TCU (10-1) jumped ahead in the first inning and pulled away late to complete the weekend sweep. Brandon McIlwain scored Cal's lone run in the seventh after singling, stealing third base and advancing home on a throwing error.

After McIlwain's run made it a 3-1 deficit, TCU plated three runs of its own in the home half of the seventh to put the game out of reach. A throwing error led to TCU's first run of the frame before miscommunication on the right side of Cal's infield allowed a pop up to drop and score two more.

Sophomore Sean Sullivan appeared on the mound for the first time this season with a designated two-inning start after missing the first two weeks of the year with a back injury. The right-hander left the contest with a 1-0 deficit; he allowed two hits and two walks to the Horned Frogs. Cal turned to six relief pitchers the rest of the game, including Josh White, who shored up 2.1 innings immediately after Sullivan.

Cal finished the game with four total hits and managed just two against TCU starter Russell Smith through the first six innings. Smith retired the first 12 Bears he faced. All four Cal hits were singles recorded by Grant Holman, Keshawn Ogans, McIlwain and John Lagattuta.
