MIAMI - The California softball team finished strong at the Felsberg Invitational, picking up a 3-1 victory over Penn State Sunday afternoon at Felsberg Field on the Florida International campus.
After a scoreless first inning,
Sophie Medellin reached on an error to start the second, followed by
Kennedy Thomas' infield single.
Mikayla Coelho cleared the bases with a two-out, two-run double to put Cal up 2-0. The Golden Bears (3-2) weren't finished in the second inning, though, as
Amani Bradley singled home Coelho to make it 3-0, Cal.Â
That was all the scoring the Bears put together on the day, but that was all pitcher
Alexandra Perez needed.Â
Perez threw a complete game, totaling one unearned run, four hits, two strikeouts and one walk. The sophomore carried the load in the circle for the majority of the weekend for the Bears, logging 28 innings of work over the five games, good for an ERA of 2.00 on the year.Â
Penn State put some pressure on Perez in the top of the third, loading the bases with only one out, but stellar defense by the Bears got Perez out of the jam with no runs allowed.Â
The Nittany Lions got on the board in the top of the fourth when a throwing error by Perez allowed the Penn State runner on second to come around and score. PSU still had a runner on third but Perez got out of the inning without any further damage.Â
Next week is the first of three straight weekends of in-state tournaments for the Bears. Cal heads to Fresno next weekend for the Fresno State Invitational from Feb. 14-16. The Bears will play five games in the tournament.Â
