Cal Drops Friday Contest

Bears Defeated By San Francisco In Series Opener

BERKELEY – Sam Stoutenborough tossed a season-best seven innings and Nathan Martorella ripped his first career home run, but neither were enough as California lost a series opener to San Francisco, 4-1, on Friday at Evans Diamond.

The loss extended Cal's (3-10) skid to five games dating back to last weekend. Robert Emery powered the visiting Dons (7-7) to victory with a pair of home runs, both coming against Stoutenborough in the second and fourth innings.

Despite surrendering the pair of long balls, Stoutenborough was strong on the mound. He struck out four Dons and issued just one walk while working around five hits. The only other run Stoutenborough allowed was on a RBI groundout in the third.

Trailing 4-0 in the seventh, Cal received its first run off the bat of Martorella, who turned on a 1-1 pitch and deposited a solo home run to right field. The freshman's long ball was one of four hits on the night for Cal; Darren Baker, Grant Holman and Max Flower added singles.

San Francisco used two pitchers to limit the Bears' bats as Landen Bourassa threw five scoreless innings for the win and Alex Pham registered the four-inning save.
