SAN FRANCISCO – After receiving little run support over his first three starts on the mound this season,
Grant Holman was backed by California's bats early and often in a 6-1 victory over San Francisco on Saturday at Benedetti Diamond.
Holman struck out five Dons (7-8) over 6.1 innings and did not surrender a run until the seventh frame as Cal (4-10) snapped a five-game losing streak and evened its weekend series with San Francisco. A two-run home run by
Nathan Martorella in the first set the tone for the afternoon while
Max Flower made it a six-run advantage later in the sixth with a two-RBI single.
Heading into Saturday's contest, the Bears had scored just one run over Holman's first 18.1 innings pitched this season. By the end of the first inning, Cal had doubled that total.
San Francisco put at least one runner in scoring position in each of the first three frames, but Holman worked around the trouble. The sophomore hit his stride in the later frames; he retired the side in the fourth and sixth innings and used a 3-6-1 double play in the fifth.
The Dons put runners on the corners in the seventh with one out and forced a Cal pitching change.
Ian Villers replaced Holman on the mound and despite allowing San Francisco's lone run on an infield single, he escaped the jam. When the Dons continued to apply pressure in the eighth against Villers, the Bears went to the bullpen once again and brought out
Joseph King. The freshman silenced the San Francisco batters, striking out three over the final 1.1 frames to seal the win.
Leading 3-0 after five innings with Martorella's home run and a RBI double by
Quentin Selma, Cal broke the game open in the sixth. Holman and
Brandon McIlwain drew one-out walks, opening the door for a RBI single from
Steven Zobac and Flower's two-run single in consecutive at bats.
