HARRISONBURG, Va. - The California softball team stayed red hot in the chilly Virginia weather with an 14-6 victory over Siena College Saturday at the JMU Dukes Invitational at Veterans Memorial Park on the James Madison campus. It was Cal's second double-digit run performance this weekend.Â
The Golden Bears improved to 13-9 on the year, and it's their third straight win this weekend.Â
Nicole Hammoude swung the big bat against the Saints, clubbing two home runs, the first two of her career. The Cal freshman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBI.Â
Makena Smith went 4-for-4 including a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Smith also doubled in the sixth. It was her first career four-hit game, 10th multi-hit game of 2020, her fourth home run of the season and her second round tripper of the day after belting one against UConn in Cal's first game on Saturday.Â
Saturday night's game marked Cal's first game in 2020 slugging three home runs, and the second multi-home run game of the year.Â
Highlighting the six-run first inning was a three-run home run by Hammoude, her second extra-base hit of the weekend. Smith and
Mikayla Coelho both singled to increase their hitting streaks - 18 for Coelho and 17 for Smith - and Coelho also earned an RBI with her single for the first run of the game.
Lauren Espalin scored the second run of the game after
Kacey Zobac reached on an error. Before Hammoude's smash,
Cameron Kondo made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly.Â
In the second inning, Smith led off with another single. She scored later in the inning off of an RBI groundout by Coelho, her second RBI on the day.Â
Coelho singled in the fourth inning, marking her 12th game in 2020 with multiple hits.Â
The Saints clawed their way back in the game in the top of the third, scoring five times, including a three-run homer.Â
D'Asha Saiki singled in the fifth to give her a current six-game hitting streak.Â
Cal will play UConn for the second time this weekend in the championship game of the tournament Sunday at 9:30 am PT. Following the game against the Huskies, the Bears will play James Madison in the makeup game from Friday before heading home to Berkeley.Â
