Haley Giavara won in doubles and singles in Cal's victory over the Cougars in L.A.
LOS ANGELES – California women's tennis star
Haley Giavara led the 19th-ranked Golden Bears to a 4-1 victory over Washington State on Monday, with the All-American clinching the result over the Cougars in the ITA Kickoff Weekend hosted by UCLA.
Â
The 18th-ranked Giavara, a sophomore, beat the 55th-ranked Michaela Bayerlova, 7-6(10) 6-2, at court-one singles to end the consolation match and lift Cal's record to 2-1. WSU fell to 0-2.
Â
"We did a really good job today, especially in singles, making adjustments from yesterday," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "We won all of our first sets today and pulled out a couple tiebreaks – with close ones on a couple courts – in singles. Erin (Richardson) just missed out on clinching; she was at match point right as Haley won her match. We were in a really good position in every court in singles, and that's something I'm really pleased with. This was definitely a good win, and we're excited to move forward as we start this season."
Â
Richardson led Melissa Ates 7-6(3), 6-5 on court six when Giavara's result ended the contest.
Â
Earlier in doubles, Cal led off the day with a win on court two, with Giavara and freshman
Hannah Viller Moeller topping Ates and Yang Lee, 6-2. But two losses for the Bears gave WSU the doubles point. The Cougars clinched it when Bayerlova and Hikaru Sato beat Cal's 53rd-ranked
Anna Bright and
Julia Rosenqvist, 7-6(5), on court one.
In singles, the 43rd-ranked Rosenqvist bested the Cougars' Fifa Kumhom, 6-2, 6-1, to tie the match at 1-1, and the 26th-ranked
Valentina Ivanov followed with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Sato to give Cal a 2-1 lead. Viller Moeller put Cal in the driver's seat with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Pang Jittakoat on court four, before Giavara sealed the win.
Â
Cal returns to the Hellman Tennis Complex to host San Francisco on Friday at 12 p.m., weather permitting. Please stay tuned to
