Haley Giavara secured Cal's win over the Gauchos.
BERKELEY – Seventeenth-ranked California women's tennis ran its winning streak to five matches when it defeated UC Santa Barbara, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Sophomore All-American
Haley Giavara clinched the victory with a straight-set win over Elizaveta Volodko in singles.
Â
Cal's record improved to 6-1, including a perfect 5-0 at home, after beating No. 3 UCLA on Saturday and topping the Gauchos on Sunday. UCSB's record stands at 1-1.
Â
"We had another fantastic, beautiful sunny day at Hellman," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said on Sunday. "This is the first time in three or four weeks that we've had back-to-back matches, so it was really important to see how we'd react to that, and we did a really good job. After a great top-five win yesterday, to come back and see us maintain our level and continue to get better was great."
Â
The Golden Bears last played back-to-back matches from Jan. 24-25 in the ITA Kickoff Weekend at UCLA.
Â
On Sunday, Cal captured the doubles point when
Anna Bright and
Hannah Viller Moeller bested Elizaveta Volodko and Camille Kiss, 6-1, on court two. Earlier, Cal's
Julia Rosenqvist and
Erin Richardson won 6-1 on court three against Shakhnoza Khatamova and Lisa Sentenac.
Â
Cal was dominant in singles, winning five of six first sets. Freshman
Hannah Viller Moeller gave the Bears a 2-0 lead when she beat Marta Gonzalez Balbé, 6-0, 6-0, on court five, and Bright followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sentenac over on court six. Giavara was next, defeating Volodko, 6-2, 6-3, on court one to secure the win.
Â
Play continued, with freshman
