Davila Powers Cal To 2-0 Win Over UCLA

BERKELEY – Evan Davila scored the gamewinning goal and assisted on Cal's second strike in the Golden Bears' 2-0 win over UCLA on Saturday at Witter Rugby Field. Both scores came in the first half, with Jonathan Estrada netting the final goal.

With its second consecutive victory, Cal improved to 2-3-0 on the season and 2-3-0 in the Pac-12 Conference. UCLA fell to 1-5-1 overall (0-4-1 Pac-12).

"Today was a great result against a very talented UCLA team," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes. "Both goals were very early in the game, and that was an important factor in the match."

The game included the first goal, assist, gamewinning goal and (three) points of Davila's Cal career.

"The satisfaction you get from winning is unlike anything else," Davila said. "Getting the gamewinning goal and assist, my first goal and assist at the collegiate level, means a lot to me."

Near the top of the UCLA box in the 14th minute, Davila took a shot that was blocked by a Bruin. He got the ball back, eluded three defenders and blasted a sliding shot into the upper right corner of the UCLA goal.

In the 16th minute, Davila intercepted the ball in midfield, dribbled into the attacking third and passed the ball to Estrada, who was streaking down the other side of the field. The junior forward stuck the ball past UCLA goalkeeper Justin Garces for his team-high second goal of the season.

Cal goalie Collin Travasos made three of his four saves in the initial 45 minutes to keep the Bruins off the scoresheet.

The Bruins had their chances, especially late. In the 76th minute, a UCLA free kick found Ahmed Longmire deep in Cal's box. But the Bruin headed over the crossbar. In the 78th minute, Andrew Paoli fired a shot off Cal's right post. Longmire took a last-gasp shot from distance in the final seconds and shot wide.

Cal hung on for the win, with Travasos earning the first collegiate shutout of his career.

The Bears next play Stanford in the second game of the Big Clasico on Wednesday, March 24, at 7 p.m. down on the Farm.
