Cal Faces No. 9 Stanford, No. 3 Oregon State
BERKELEY – The California men's soccer team renews acquaintances with two of the best teams in the nation and in the Pac-12 Conference when the Golden Bears face No. 9 Stanford and No. 3 Oregon State for the second time this season. Cal (2-3-0, 2-3-0 Pac-12) takes on the Cardinal (6-1-0, 4-1-0 Pac-12) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the second half of the Big Clasico. The Bears then host the Beavers (7-1-0, 4-1-0 Pac-12) on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Witter Rugby Field.

Cal enters Wednesday on a two-game winning streak with victories at San Diego State, 3-2, on March 13 and against UCLA, 2-0, on March 20 in Berkeley.

The Bears began the spring 2021 season against Stanford on Feb. 20, falling, 3-1, in their first game at Witter Rugby Field.

- The Bears have beaten Stanford, 1-0, in each of their last two games on the Farm. Defender JJ Foe Nuphaus scored his first collegiate goal in 2018, while forward Tommy Williamson converted a penalty kick in 2019.
- Forward Jonathan Estrada, who scored in each of the last two games, leads Cal in goals (2) and points (4).
- Midfielder Evan Davila is tied for second in points (3).
- Forward Arman Samimi, who had the winner and an assist at SDSU, also has three points.
- Forward Nate Carrasco paces the Bears in assists with the two he collected against SDSU.
- Goalkeeper Collin Travasos has played the full 90 minutes in each of the last two games and earned his first shutout against UCLA.
- Travasos has a 2.00 goals-against average in 360 minutes played.
- Kevin Grimes (SMU '90) is in his 21st season as Cal's head coach.
- Grimes is Cal's all-time wins leader (206).
- Grimes' staff includes Cal alumni in assistant coach Jacob Wilson (class of 2009), goalkeeper coach Henry Foulk (class of 1984) and volunteer assistant coach Alec Sundly (class of 2013).
Scouting Stanford
- The Cardinal lost 1-0 at Washington on March 20.
- Forward Zach Ryan leads Stanford in goals (6) and points (15), while forward Charlie Wehan paces his team in assists (5).
- Forward Gabe Segal leads Stanford in gamewinning goals (3).
- Goalkeeper Andrew Thomas has a 0.70 GAA in six games.
- Jeremy Gunn is in his ninth season as Stanford's head coach.
Scouting Oregon State
- OSU won 5-0 at San Diego State on March 20.
- Forward Gloire Amanda leads OSU in goals (11), points (28) and gamewinning goals (4) and is tied for the lead in assists (6).
- Midfielder Mouhameth Thiam also has six assists.
- Goalie Adrian Fernandez has a 0.63 GAA in eight games.
- Terry Boss is in his third season as Oregon State's head coach.
Samimi Named March 16 Pac-12 Player of the Week
The conference named
Arman Samimi the Pac-12 Player of the Week on March 16 for the forward's heroics in Cal's 3-2 win at San Diego State on March 13. Along with netting the gamewinning goal, the La Jolla, California, product assisted on
Fahmi Ibrahim's first-half strike. The Pac-12 honor was the first of Samimi's career and the first for Cal this season.
