LOS ANGELES – California couldn't break through with runners on base in an 8-0, six-inning, loss to No. 6 UCLA in the first game of the series on Thursday night at Easton Stadium.
The Bears (28-25-1, 8-14 Pac-12) could only put a pair of hits on the board against tough Bruin pitching, singles from
Kennedy Thomas and
Tatum Anzaldo. It was the conference-leading 73
rd hit of the season for Anzaldo, who was named First Team All-Conference on Wednesday. Â Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
UCLA got on the board early on in the home first with a 2-run home run off the bat of Maya Brady.
The Bears were able to get a pair of runners on in the second, third and fourth innings, but couldn't push anything across, stranding six base runners through five.
Sona Halajian hit a long fly ball to the warning track in the third, but it was caught to end the Cal threat. Â
The Bruins got the bats going again in the fifth, scoring four runs off four hits to lead 6-0 and plated two more in the sixth to secure the series-opening victory. Â Â
