Cal Outfielder Selected In Competitive Balance A Round Of 2022 MLB Draft
BERKELEY – California standout
Dylan Beavers was selected 33rd overall in the 2022 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, becoming the third Golden Bear taken in the first round since 2019.
Â
The Cal outfielder squeezed into the final stages of the first round, hearing his name called during the Competitive Balance A portion (picks No. 33-39). Under head coach
Mike Neu (2018-present), Cal has seen 17 Bears taken in the MLB Draft, including three in the first round. Beavers joined former Cal greats Andrew Vaughn and Korey Lee – who were the No. 3 and No. 32 overall picks in the 2019 MLB Draft – as the program's first-round picks in that span.
Â
Beavers, a native of Paso Robles, California, is the seventh overall Cal player to be drafted by Baltimore and the first since Dixon Anderson in 2010 (Anderson did not sign).
Â
After seeing limited action as a freshman during the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, Beavers became a dominant presence at the plate as a two-time All-Pac-12 first team outfielder in his sophomore and junior campaigns. The lefty slugger amassed 36 career home runs, the seventh most ever by a Cal player, and slashed .294/.409/.615 in 123 collegiate games played.
Â
Beavers slashed .291/.426/.634 with 17 home runs and 50 runs batted in while starting all 56 games in right field during a standout junior season this spring in Berkeley. He drew 51 walks – tied for the sixth-most in a single season in program history – and reached base safely in 51 of 56 games, including a streak of 23 consecutive games from April 2-May 13.
Â
As a sophomore in 2021, Beavers earned All-America honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after leading the Pac-12 with 18 home runs, including 10 during conference play. Along with recording 49 RBIs and 44 runs scored, he showed his capabilities on the base paths with 10 stolen bases.
Â
The 2022 MLB Draft continues Monday with rounds 3-10 being televised live on MLB Network starting at 11 a.m. PT.
