Keshawn Ogans Drafted By Braves On Day Three
Six Total Golden Bears Selected Throughout MLB Draft
BERKELEY – California shortstop
Keshawn Ogans was selected in the 20th round of the 2022 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. Taken with the 605th overall pick, Ogans was the sixth Golden Bear to hear his name called throughout the three-day draft.
Â
Ogans, a junior from Daly City, California, rounded out Cal's six-player draft class, joining standout outfielder
Dylan Beavers – who was selected No. 33 overall by the Baltimore Orioles in the Competitive Balance A portion of the first round on Sunday night – pitcher
Steven Zobac (No. 115, Kansas City), pitcher
Josh White (No. 142, Miami), first baseman
Nathan Martorella (No. 150, San Diego) and pitcher
Joseph King (No. 277, St. Louis).
Â
Ogans' selection came one day after Cal set a program record (4) for the most student-athletes selected in the first five rounds of the MLB Draft. The Bears' six draftees in 2022 are their second most in a single year in the
Mike Neu era (2018-present); Cal had seven student-athletes drafted in 2019. Under Neu, Cal has seen 22 total Bears taken in the MLB Draft.
Â
A mainstay in the Cal lineup throughout his three seasons in Berkeley, Ogans started 116 of 121 games played at shortstop since 2020. The slick-handed infielder had a career year in 2022, earning an All-Pac-12 honorable mention after slashing .315/.378/.420 with 69 hits, 36 runs and 30 runs batted in. He reached base safely in 46 of 56 games, including a stretch of 18 in a row from March 8-April 8. Defensively, Ogans posted a .966 fielding percentage while ranking fourth in the Pac-12 with 155 assists.
