Bears Tie UCLA, Beat SDSU In Last Regular-Season Home Games
Cal is unbeaten over its last three games, all at home, starting with the Oct. 29 draw with Stanford and continuing through a 1-1 tie with UCLA on Nov. 2 and a 1-0 win over San Diego State on Sunday.
Â
Against the Bruins, Cal played much of the game a man down when
Giancarlo Mota was shown a red card in the 45th minute. But the Bears stunned UCLA in the 60th minute when
Santiago Hopkins, a junior right back, lofted what looked like a cross from the flank that nestled into the far corner of the Bruins' goal and gave Cal a 1-0 lead. Along with his first career goal, Hopkins collected his first career shot on the play. In the 81st minute, Andre Ochoa scored for UCLA, and the teams settled for the 1-1 draw.
Â
On Sunday against SDSU, with less than 10 seconds left in the first half, Cal's
Evan Davila sent a pass to
Fernando Lara on the flank, and Lara crossed the ball into the box. An unmarked
Adrian Guzman corralled the ball and fired past SDSU goalkeeper Logan Erb for his second goal and second game-winning goal of the season. Goalkeeper
Connor Lambe made five saves to preserve the shutout and the victory.
