TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona's Kiko Romero was a thorn in the California baseball team's side all evening as the Wildcats defeated the Golden Bears 13-2 at Hi Corbett Field on Friday. Romero went 4-for-4 with two home runs and a triple and drove in six as the Wildcats scored in four of the first six innings before blowing it open late.
Cal (8-4/0-1 Pac-12) scored the first runs of the game in the top of the second inning.
Tucker Bougie led off the inning with a walk.
Peyton Schulze singled to left field. With two outs,
Jag Burden smacked a double down the right field line that scored both Bougie and Schulze. But that would be all the runs the Bears would score, as they finished the night with two runs on seven hits. Schulze had two of the Bears' six hits.
Carson Crawford,
Dom Souto,
Kade Kretzschmar, and
Luca Bove had the others.
Arizona (10-3/1-0 Pac-12) got a strong outing from starter TJ Nichols (3-0) who matched a career-high with nine strikeouts. He went 6.2 innings, scattering five hits, and two earned runs, with a pair of walks.
Andres Galan got the start for the Bears, he was one of five pitchers used on Friday evening. Galan went 2.2 innings, giving up a pair of hits, including a solo home run to Romero in the second.
Taking the loss for the Bears was
Chris Stamos (2-2) who got the Bears out of a jam in the third but allowed the go-ahead run on a solo home run to Romero in the fourth.
With Arizona in control, the Bears had their chance to tie the game up in the top of the fifth. Cal got runners at the corners with one out when Green Jr. hit a ground ball into the shift for a 6-3 inning-ending double play.
A two-run triple by triple by Romero in the seventh put the game out of reach for the Bears. Arizona added a home run by Cameron LaLiberte in the seventh and four more runs in the eighth thanks to a two-run single by Romero again and a home run to left field by Garen Caulfield.
