Bears Split Saturday Twin Billing

USC Comes Back In Nightcap To Win Series

BERKELEY – The California baseball team slugged their way to a thrilling 8-7 win in extra innings in game one of Saturday's doubleheader to force the rubber match, unfortunately, USC took the nightcap 6-3 to win the series.

Cal (9-8, 1-5 Pac-12) finished the day with 11 runs and 14 hits. The Golden Bears smashed six extra-base hits, including four home runs, two from Caleb Lomavita in the opener.

USC (10-8-1, 4-2 Pac-12) finished the day with three home runs. The solo home run by Ryan Jackson to begin the top of the sixth in game two was the difference for the Trojans.

Game 1
After quickly falling behind 3-0 after two innings, the Golden Bears came to life in the middle innings. Cal scored one in the fourth, four in the fifth, and two in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead.

Peyton Schulze smashed his second home run of the year in the bottom of the fourth to get the Bears on the scoreboard. It was the first of six extra-base hits for Cal in game one.

In the bottom of the fifth Joey Donnelly singled on a bunt with two outs and Jack Johnston got hit by a pitch to put two on for Lomavita who launched a home run to left center for the first of his two home runs. Two batters later, Cal got an RBI double off the bat of Carson Crawford to cap the rally in the fifth. In the sixth Dom Souto hit a two-run home run, his second of the season, to put the Bears out front 7-3.

USC chipped away at the Bears' lead scoring two in the seventh and tied it up in the eighth following a two-run home run by Carson Wells.

Tucker Bougie (2-1) entered the game for the Golden Bears in the top of the eighth and went the final 2.1 innings to earn his second win of the season. Bougie scattered two hits and struck out two.

In the bottom of the 10th, the Trojans handed the ball off to closer Garrett Clark who had only allowed one earned run in 11 appearances before surrendering a towering blast to Lomavita for the walk-off win. It is the first walk-off home run for the Bears since Dom Souto hit a home run to defeat No. 6 Oregon State on March 26, 2022.

Game 2
In game two, Cal had the early momentum. The Bears scored a run in the first and two in the third to take an early 3-0 lead. Max Hadron pulled a ball down the right field line for an RBI single that scored Lomavita. In the third Souto singled through the right side to score Crawford. One batter later Kade Kretzschmar singled to center to score Handron.

Connor Sullivan (1-2) got the start for the Bears in game two and was cruising early, facing the minimum through three. He finished the night throwing a career-high 5.1 innings, surrendering five hits, six runs (one earned) with a walk, and four strikeouts.

In the fifth and sixth inning home runs to Connor Aoki and Jackson gave the Trojans the lead for good.

Earning the wins for USC in game two was reliever Fischer Johnson (2-2) who threw three complete, scattering two hits.
