CORVALLIS, Ore. – The California baseball team got off to a quick start behind RBIs from
Peyton Schulze and
Max Handron in the opening inning to go up 2-0 but ultimately fell to Oregon State 5-3 in the series opener at Coleman Field on Friday night. The Golden Bears (9-9, 1-6 Pac 12) would add a run in the third inning but failed to score for the remainder of the game.
After
Caleb Lomavita led off the game with a single in the first,
Rodney Green Jr. and
Carson Crawford both drew walks to load the bases. Schulze would single to right field to score Lomavita. Handron would then hit a sacrifice fly to score Green Jr.
In the bottom of the second, Oregon State was able to load the bases and Cal starting pitcher
Christian Becerra gave up a walk to give the Beavers their first run of the game.
Schulze went deep for the third time this season in the third inning to give the Bears a 3-1 lead but it was the bottom of the fourth that proved to be the difference maker for the game. Oregon State (14-8, 2-5 Pac 12) had three hits and scored four runs, including two off Cal errors to take the lead for good.
Becerra finished three innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Reliever
Tyler Stasiowski pitched 3.1 innings giving up no hits or runs and striking out three.
Austin Turkington (0-1) took the loss for the Bears.
