Cal Topped By Arizona State, 13-9

Sun Devils’ 6-0 Second-Period Run Keys Win

BERKELEY – Maya Lawliss picked up her team-leading fourth hat trick of the season but it was not enough for the Cal lacrosse team in a 13-9 Pac-12 loss to Arizona State on Sunday at California Memorial Stadium. The Sun Devils took control of the contest by scoring seven goals in the second period, including six unanswered tallies that turned a 4-3 deficit into a 9-4 advantage before eventually leading 10-5 at the break.

Cal would never recover from the second-period onslaught.

The Golden Bears (3-8, 1-4 Pac-12) scored three of the game's four third-period goals to pull within 11-8 with 3:55 remaining in the quarter but never got closer. Neither team scored for the next 15:35 before Arizona State tacked on a pair of goals in the final 3:20 and Cal scored the game's final goal.

Lawliss scored an unassisted goal in each of the opening three quarters (14:23 1Q, 14:14 2Q, 13:27 3Q) with her first coming on a free position shot, while Amanda Morse added two scores on assists from Kennedy Mason (11:46 1Q) and Quinnlyn Mason (3:55 3Q). Kate Rothman (12:54 2Q), Mya Wang (2:35 3Q), Quinnlyn Mason (6:06 3Q) and Clara Page (1:29 4Q) also had unassisted goals with Rothman and Mason scoring on free position shots.

Cal posted a 30-23 advantage in shots and both teams had 21 shots on goal.

Alicia Souliotis and Riley Drullinger each had four saves for the Bears with Souliotis giving up the first nine Arizona State goals during the game's initial 27:25 and Drullinger allowing four over the final 32:35.

Arizona State (3-7, 2-3) held a 15-10 margin in draw controls. The Bears picked up 16 ground balls while the Sun Devils had 11, while Arizona State (11) turned it over once more than Cal (10). There were 61 fouls (Arizona State 34, Cal 27) and six yellow cards (Arizona State 5, Cal 1). Cal was 3-of-9 on free positions shots while Arizona State was 3-of-5.

Cal will start the second half of its Pac-12 schedule and a string of three consecutive road games that will conclude its regular-season road slate Friday at No. 19 USC (9-3, 4-1 Pac-12). First draw is scheduled for 3 pm PDT and the matchup will be streamed on USC Live Stream-3.
