LOS ANGELES – The California lacrosse team ran into the Pac-12's lone ranked team and co-conference leader USC on Friday at McAlister Field and the Trojans came away with an 18-4 victory.
USC (10-3, 5-1 Pac-12) scored early and often in a contest Cal (3-9, 1-5) never led.
Maya Lawliss got the Golden Bears on the board by converting a free position opportunity with 10:59 remaining in the first quarter and cut their deficit to 2-1, but USC would score the game's next 13 goals.
Kennedy Goss (13:02),
Avery Hoeft (10:12) and
Belle Tiesi (4:55) did find the back of the net for the Bears in the fourth quarter. The goals for Goss and Tiesi were also on free position shots, while
Caroline Roxas assisted on Hoeft's score.
Goss also had a team-high four draw controls and moved into second place on Cal's all-time list with 175, passing Megan Takacs (174, 2010-13). Goss is within three of all-time leader LizaBanks Campagna (178, 2018-21).
Cal's 12 draw controls and 3-of-5 on free position shots were both just one shy of USC's 13 and 4-of-8, respectively, but the Trojans held sizable advantages in nearly every other category including shots (37-10), shots on goal (26-7), ground balls (19-5) and caused turnovers (10-1).
The Bears played all three of their goalkeepers with
Alicia Souliotis (10 goals allowed, five saves) in the net for the entire first half followed by
Riley Drullinger (27:58, eight GA, two SV) and
Chloe Rand (2:02, zero GA, one SV) in the second.
USC's Ella Haney was the game's leading scorer with five points on four goals and one assist, while starting Trojan goalkeeper Kait Devir (one GA, two SV) played the first three quarters and was credited with the win.
Cal will play its second in a series of three consecutive road games on Sunday at Arizona State (3-8, 2-4 Pac-12). First draw is scheduled for noon PT/MT and the matchup will be televised live on Pac-12 Bay Area and Pac-12 Arizona.
