Crawford’s Blast Helps Bears Even Series

Bears Rally In Seventh To Win Game Two

BERKELEY – Sophomore shortstop Crawford jumped all over a hanging breaking ball in the bottom of the seventh, blasting a two-run home run that put Cal out front for good. The Golden Bears held on to win 8-6 on Saturday afternoon to even the series a game apiece.

Cal (18-17, 6-14 Pac-12) finished the afternoon scoring eight runs on nine hits. Kade Kretzschmar went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Dom Souto went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored, and Caleb Lomavita was 1-for-4 with a three-run double. However, it was Crawford's home run in the seventh that was the difference. The home run was the sixth of the year for Crawford and the ninth of his career.

On the mound, the Bears got a terrific pitching performance from reliever Matt Lozovoy (1-1). Lozovoy entered the game in the top of the sixth with a runner on and the game tied. He got out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth and allowed just one hit over the final three innings of work to earn his first win of the season.

Oregon (25-12, 10-7 Pac-12) finished the day with six runs on 10 hits. Rikuu Nishida, Bennett Thompson, Ason Aroz, and Gavin Grant all had two hits. Aroz hit a two-run home run in the sixth as part of the four-run rally by the Ducks.

For the second-consecutive day, it was the Bears who scored first. Cal sent three across the plate in the bottom of the second inning, with Kretzschmar, Schulze, and Crawford all reaching safely to start the rally. Max Handron drew a walk to score Kretzschmar for the first run of the game. Souto followed that up with a double down the left field line that scored Schulze and Crawford.

Paulshawn Pasqualotto got the start for the Bears and was very strong early. He threw three shutout innings before running into trouble in the fourth. In the fourth, he got two outs but had trouble putting the Ducks away, back-to-back two-out hits by Aroz, and Grant scored two for Oregon.

In the home half of the inning, Cal scored three more times on the three-run double by Lomavita that scored Handron, Souto, and Nathan Manning.

With the Bears leading 6-2, Pasqualotto came back out for the fifth inning but hit the leadoff batter. Daniel Cowell entered the game for Cal and got a strikeout and an inning double play.

Oregon tied the game up with a four-run sixth inning. The two-run home run by Aroz was the big hit. A throwing error by Lomavita on the double steal by Nishida and Grant allowed both runners to score to briefly tie the game at six.

The three-hit game for Kretzschmar is his fifth of the season. He has had at least three hits in six of the last seven games. He now has 11 multi-hit games on the year which is tied for the team lead. With his hit and walk, Schulze has extended his hitting streak to seven games and his reached base safely streak to 15 games.
