PITTSBURGH – The Cal baseball team pounded out 13 hits on the afternoon but host Pittsburgh completed the sweep, winning 10-5 on Sunday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field.
Cal (18-22) got a three-hit performance from
Kade Kretzschmar, his 12
th multi-hit game of the month and sixth three-hit game of the season. He finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
Peyton Schulze and
Dom Souto also collected multiple hits on the day. Schulze went 2-for-5 with a run scored, Souto was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Nathan Manning led the Bears with two runs driven in.
Caleb Lomavita knocked in a run and extended his reached base safely streak to 13 games after finishing the day 1-for-5.
Pittsburgh (20-21) jumped out to an early lead scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. They added three in the second and three in the third. More than enough run support for starter Kyle Mosley (1-4) who tossed five complete for his first win of the season. The trio of Jack Anderson, CJ Funk, and Jayden Melendez combined for nine of the Panther's 13 hits. Anderson was 3-for-4 with two doubles, Funk was 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, and Melendez went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
Taking the loss for the Golden Bears was starter
Connor Sullivan (2-4) who surrendered 11 hits and 10 runs (four earned) in three innings of work.
Daniel Colwell,
Jack Kirrer, and
Vaughn Mauterer all combined to throw five scoreless innings in relief.
After giving four runs in the bottom of the first inning the Bears briefly got back into the game scoring three runs in the top of the second. Manning had the big hit with a two-run single to right field that scored Souto and
Max Handron. Cal added a run in the eighth and ninth on RBI ground balls from Lomavita and
Carson Crawford.
UP NEXT
Cal returns to the Bay Area Tuesday for a nonconference contest at Santa Clara. The first pitch for the Bears and Broncos is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
