SEATTLE – The California softball team dropped a pair of games to open the series at No. 10 Washington on Friday at the Husky Softball Stadium.   Â
The Golden Bears (24-11-1, 6-7-1 Pac-12) got a two-run home run by
Tatum Anzaldo and three hits apiece off the bats of
Makena Smith and
Mika Lee. Olivia Johnson paced the Huskies (28-8, 9-5 Pac-12) with a pair of long balls.
Game 1: #10 Washington 6, Cal 4
The Bears out-hit the Huskies, 9-4, but couldn't get the extra-base hits with runners on the bases. Eight of Cal's nine base hits were singles other than Smith's two-run double in the seventh, which cut the late deficit in half.
Washington got on the board early with a two-run home run off the bat of Sami Reynolds and took the 2-0 lead into the fourth inning. Cal found an answer in the frame, scoring its first run on a
Kacey Zobac RBI single to plate Smith after she led off with a base hit. Zobac took advantage of a Husky fielding error at shortstop, scoring from second base to make it 2-2 heading to the home half.
The Huskies quickly went back in front in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on two hits, three walks and a bases-loaded hit by pitch to make the score 6-2. Cal tried to rally in the seventh with back-to-back hits from Lee and Anzaldo before the Smith double, but a pair of groundouts ended the game. Â
Game 2: #10 Washington 16, Cal 5 (5)
The Huskies built an 8-0 lead after two innings, putting up four runs in each of the first two frames before the Bears tried to chip away. Anzaldo hit a two-run home run, her second of the year, in the third and Zobac followed with an RBI single to make it 8-3 heading to the UW third.
Lee recorded an RBI single in the fourth to make it 9-4 after the Huskies scored a run in the bottom of the third but another crooked number inning from Washington in the bottom half made it 16-4.
Sona Halajian hit a solo home run in the fifth for Cal's final run.
