Cougars Take Game One

Bears Hit Three Home Runs In Loss

BERKELEY – Sloppy play proved costly as the Cal baseball team dropped the opener to visiting Washington State 9-5 on Friday evening at Stu Gordon Stadium. Three errors by the Golden Bears led to four runs helping the Cougars extend innings.

Cal (21-24, 9-16 Pac-12) hit three more home runs and once again scored runs late in the contest. But it wasn't enough to overcome an early 8-1 deficit. Rodney Green Jr. led the Bears with three hits, he was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Max Handron and Kade Kretzschmar both went 2-for-4 and both hit mammoth home runs. Carson Crawford collected Cal's other home run, his eighth of the year.

Washington State (28-19, 9-15 Pac-12) Scored eight runs in the first four innings and also finished the night with three home runs. Jonah Advincula went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. He led off the game with a solo home run, his fifth of the year. Will Cresswell and Cam Magee also had home runs for the Cougars.

Cal starter Christian Becerra (2-4) took the loss. He allowed nine hits and eight runs (five earned) over six innings while striking out four.

Washington State starter Dakota Hawkins (5-3) got the win, going six complete allowing six hits, four runs, with two walks and seven strikeouts. Cade Kaelber earned his fourth save of the year pitching the final three innings.

WSU scored eight runs in the first four innings. Home runs by Advincula and Creswell were the big hits in the first and second innings. The Cougars also got an RBI double from Jacob McKeon to begin the scoring in the third. A two-out error by the Bears in the third allowed McKeon to score and preceded the two-run home run by Magee.

Cal got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Crawford hit a home run the opposite way. The Bears added three more in the sixth to make it 8-4 when Kretzschmar hit a ball into the track stadium next door for his 13th home run of the season.

In the top of the seventh, a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt allowed the Cougars to add an insurance run. Cal got that run back in the eighth on the solo home run from Handron, his eighth home run of the year and fifth in the last four contests.

Out of the pen, Daniel Cowell and Vaughn Mauterer turned in strong performances. Colwell went 1.2 innings allowing just a walk, he inherited a runner on first with one out and stranded him to keep the game 9-4. Mauterer struck out two on six pitches and got a lazy fly ball for the third out in the ninth.
