Bears Blast Their Way To Series Clinching Win

Cal Hits Four More Home Runs In Road Win Over Bruins

LOS ANGELES – The Cal baseball team smashed four more home runs, three coming in the top of the ninth inning, to seal a crucial series road victory over UCLA, winning 9-2 on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Cal (20-23, 8-15 Pac-12) gets its second conference series victory of the season thanks to another power display. The Golden Bears collected a season-high eight extra-base hits, hitting three doubles, a triple, and four home runs. On the mound, Cal got stellar pitching from Paulshawn Pasqualotto (3-1) and Andres Galan who combined to hold the Bruins to two runs on six hits.

Once again, the entire lineup got in on the hit parade. Cal finished the day with 14 hits with five players collecting multiple hits. Kade Kretzschmar had two legs of the cycle hitting a solo home run, his 12th of the year, and an RBI triple. Also collecting home runs were Caleb Lomavita, Max Handron, and Dom Souto. Carson Crawford and Jack Johnston had RBI doubles.

UCLA (24-18-1, 10-11-1 Pac-12) falls to 4-16-1 when allowing four or more runs. Daylen Reyes had two of the Bruins' six hits, Jack Holman went 1-for-4 with a home run, his sixth in the last 13 games.

Following a similar script from yesterday's meeting, Cal jumped out to an early lead thanks to four runs in the first three innings. Kretzschmar led off the scoring with a solo home run to start the second inning. The Bears added two more runs in the frame on RBI doubles by Crawford and Johnston. In the third, Rodney Green Jr. poked a single the opposite way that scored Lomavita from second, it was the fourth run allowed by UCLA starter Austin Kelly (4-3). After giving up four runs in the first three innings, the senior rebounded to go 7.1, allowing eight hits, four runs (all earned), with three walks and six strikeouts. The four earned runs are the second most he has allowed this season.

Kelly's counterpart, Pasqualotto, was tremendous. He held the Bruins to three hits and no runs over five innings of work. He did allow four walks but mitigated the damage by not allowing a Bruin leadoff hitter to reach. After allowing a two-out walk in the fourth, he retired the final four batters he faced to earn his third win of the season.

Galan captured his first collegiate save going the final four innings. He scattered two runs off three hits, an RBI single in the seventh, and the home run to Holman in the eighth were the only blemishes to his stellar performance. He rebounded getting the final four outs, two via strikeout. Galan finished the afternoon with four strikeouts and no walks.

In the top of the ninth inning with the Bears leading 4-2, Cal removed all hopes of a UCLA comeback when Cal scored five runs on four hits. Souto led off the scoring spree with his fifth home run of the season and 10th of his career. Two batters later, Handron and Lomavita went back-to-back to make it 7-2. Green Jr. singled to bring up Kretzschmar who hit a ball down the right field line for a standup triple that scored Green Jr. from first. Schulze knocked in Kretzschmar from third on a sacrifice fly for the contest's final run.
