Bears Sweep Bruins

Max Handron Hits Two More Home Runs

LOS ANGELES – For the first time since 1991 the Cal baseball team swept UCLA on the road. The Golden Bears hit four more home runs today, two from Max Handron, and held on to win 9-8 on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Cal (21-23, 9-15 Pac-12) finished the afternoon scoring nine runs on 12 hits. The Bears were particularly strong in two out situations where they drove in five of their nine runs. Handron clubbed two more home runs to give him four for the series. Joining Handron with home runs were Caleb Lomavita and Rodney Green Jr. Cal also got doubles from Peyton Schulze and Nathan Manning.

UCLA (24-19-1, 10-12-1 Pac-12) made the Bears earn it. Trailing three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Bruins loaded the bases with no outs. Daylen Reyes singled up the middle to drive in two, part of his three-hit performance. Tucker Bougie closed it out, getting Darius Perry to strike out with the tying run on third.

Three other Bruins had multiple hits on the day. Jack Holman and Duce Gourson also had three hits each. Holman hit his third home run of the series and 11th of the year in the bottom of the fifth that briefly gave the Bruins the lead.

Unlike the previous two contests, when Cal needed just two pitchers in each contest to get the win, the Bears used six pitchers to complete the sweep. Chris Stamos served as the opener and allowed a run on two hits in his first action since April 2. Daniel Colwell (2-3) got the win, throwing an inning in relief against his former team. Austin Turkington tossed a scoreless frame. Robert Aivazian was brilliant for two innings but struggled in the ninth. Bougie earned the save after striking out the side, two coming with the bases loaded.

Taking the loss for UCLA was reliever Chris Aldrich (3-2) he was charged with four runs off five hits in 2.1 innings while striking out five.

For the third-straight game, the Bears scored first. Schule knocked in the Bears' first three runs, two in the first and one in the third on an RBI double to center. He wrapped up his weekend going 3-for-5.

UCLA responded by scoring a run in the first and fourth, and briefly took the lead in the fifth on the three-run home run from Holman that scored Gourson and Darius Perry.

Cal responded by scoring three in the sixth thanks to back-to-back home runs from Handron and Lomavita. Handron added a two-run blast in the eighth to give the Bears a 9-5 cushion heading into the bottom of the eighth. For the series, Handron went 6-for-16 with four runs scored, four home runs, and eight driven in.
