Cal Falls To No. 2 North Carolina 3-1

Bears Go 0-2 On Opening Road Trip

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- The California women's soccer team (0-2-0) dropped the second match of its season-opening road trip Sunday afternoon, falling to host No. 2 North Carolina (1-0-1) 3-1 at the prestigious Dorrance Field.

The Tarheels, who finished as the runners-up in last year's NCAA Championship, wasted no time scoring their first goal of the season netting a ball in the third minute of the contest. Avery Patterson punched it on a UNC corner kick to make it a 1-0 contest.

The Golden Bears were quick to respond with a goal of their own in the 14th. Freshman Malia McMahon played a beautiful ball from her own defensive third and found junior Karlie Lema deep down the pitch. With the UNC goalkeeper coming out of the box to break up the play, Lema sidestepped the Tarheel and rolled the ball into an open net.

It was the 12th goal of Lema's career and her first of the season. McMahon was credited for her first career assists.

Despite 13 shots by the Tarheels, the teams remained deadlocked for most of the half until UNC broke through again with a goal by Melina Rebimbas in the 41st minute. North Carolina made it a 3-1 contest right out of the locker rooms with a goal by Avery Patterson in the 47th.

Sophomore goalkeeper Teagan Wy collected a career-high eight saves in the contest and now has 14 this season.

The Bears were outshot 25-2 in the match and only managed to put one frame.
