BERKELEY – The California women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season Thursday by topping San Francisco 5-1 in its home opener at Edwards Stadium. It was Cal's (1-2-0) first five-goal match since 2019 and the scoring efforts came from five different Golden Bears, who all netted their first goals of the season.
Â
Playing on their own turf for the first time this season, the Bears wasted no time taking the lead in the seventh minute of the contest. Senior midfielder
Karlie Lema drove the ball towards the goal on the baseline before shooting a perfect pass that split a pair of Dons (0-4-0) and found a cutting
Rilee Harmon for the tap in. It was the first goal of the senior midfielder's career and the first assist of the season for Lema.

Â
The two teams traded possessions for just under 20 minutes before Cal made it a 2-0 ballgame. The Bears and Dons juggled a ball inside the USF 18-yard box and an attempted clearance by the Dons' defense sent a ball right to junior midfielder
Mya Daily. On the bounce, Daily loaded and fired in her first career goal from just outside the box.
Â
Â
Cal outshot San Francisco 5-2 in the first half and held possession for 68% of the period.
Â
Out of the locker room the Dons cut the lead in half with a penalty kick made in the 61st minute, but senior forward
Anysa Gray quickly answered with a PK goal of her own in the 62nd to extend the Bears' lead to 3-1. It was Gray's fifth career goal giving her at least one score in all four seasons she's played in.
Â
Just a few minutes later in the 68th, junior
Ari Manrique found a ball off a USF defender's boot and rolled it past the keeper inside the box to make it a 4-1 contest. The Bears capped the scoring off in the 86th as senior forward
Amaya Gray played a beautiful touch to fellow senior forward
Hannah Cooper, who chipped the Dons' keeper for her second career goal.
Â
Â
The Bears outshot the Dons 12-4 in the second half giving them a 17-6 advantage for the match. All seven of Cal's goals this season have been scored by a different player.
Â
Sophomore keeper
Teagan Wy picked up her first collegiate win and tallied three saves.
