Cal Blanks Cal Poly 2-0

Lema Earns Brace In Bears’ First Shutout

BERKELEY- The California women's soccer team earned its first shutout of the season Sunday, blanking Cal Poly 2-0 at Edwards Stadium. Junior forward Karlie Lema earned a brace scoring both goals in the match.

The Golden Bears' (2-2-0) defense bent but refused to break, seeing incredible play from its back line and sophomore goalkeeper Teagan Wy, who earned her first shutout of the year. Wy had three saves and Cal held the Mustangs (1-2-1) to just six shots in the contest.

The scoring got started in the 15th minute as Lema found a ball just past midfield and showed off her speed, racing past the Mustang's back line. Just outside the 18-yard box, Lema fired a shot off her right foot that blew past the diving Cal Poly keeper and caromed off the left post to give Cal the early lead.

Cal had another opportunity just 10 minutes later with senior Abby Borchers sending a shot off the crossbar that bounced straight down and nearly crossed, but the Mustangs managed to clear the ball before any more damage was done.

The Bears, who outshot the Mustangs 6-3 in the first half, took a 1-0 lead into the locker rooms.

Lema struck again in the 72nd minute on a very similar-looking scoring play. She found herself crowded with Mustangs in Cal Poly's defensive third, but once again outraced the Mustang defense to get inside the box. When the dust had settled, she had a one-on-one with the Cal Poly keeper and fired it by her for her third goal of the season.

Cal outshot Cal Poly 10-6 and was incredibly efficient netting two of its three shots on frame.
