LAFAYETTE, La. – The California softball team got back on track on day two of the Louisiana Classics, sweeping a pair of games against Chattanooga and New Mexico to improve to 4-1 on the season.
The Golden Bears were led by six
Acacia Anders' RBI and three off the bat of
Elon Butler in the two games.
Game 1: Cal 1, Chattanooga 0
Starter
Haylei Archer had it working through three frames and got a big play from the defense behind her to escape the fourth inning. Chattanooga loaded the bases with just one-down, but a 4-6-3 double play with nice glove work from Butler to Anders ended the Moc threat.
Cal broke through in the fifth off of Moc starter Alyssa Lavdis, both in the hit and the run column with a solo shot off the bat of Butler. The first Chattanooga batter of the sixth reached and Cal went to
Anna Reimers out of the pen, closing the book on a strong outing from Archer, who went five innings with six strikeouts and no runs allowed.
Reimers was effective over the final two innings, getting the last six outs while not allowing a hit to earn her first save of the season.
Game 2: Cal 16, New Mexico 3 (5)
The Bears broke out of their offensive slump in a big way to start the game. After scoring just one run in its last 13 innings, Cal put up 11 runs on seven hits in the first frame to take a commanding lead over the Lobos.
Lagi Quiroga homered to start the inning and the Bears got 2-run base hits from Butler, Anders and
Tatum Anzaldo as part of the 11-run barrage.
Annabel Teperson earned the win for the Bears after going three innings, while allowing two runs on three hits and Cal recorded 16 RBI on its 16 hits.

Cal returns to Lamson Park for the final day of the Louisiana Classics and a 9 a.m. PT first pitch against No. 21 Louisiana.
