BERKELEY, Calif. – The California lacrosse team came up just short in a heartbreaking loss to unbeaten Lindenwood (4-0) on Friday night at California Memorial Stadium when the visiting Lions scored the game's final three goals to snatch a victory away from the Golden Bears (1-3). Logann Eldredge scored the game-winner on a free position shot with only 0:16 remaining after the Bears were called for three seconds. Eldredge had tied the contest on a man-up goal with 4:10 remaining after Lindsey Smith scored the first of the three unassisted goals with 5:38 to go after Cal had led 7-5.
Cal had three possessions to take the lead after the Lions tied the score at 7-7 but committed two turnovers and had a free position attempt saved by Lindenwood goalkeeper Haylie Sims.
Cal trailed 4-1 early in the third quarter before an impressive stretch when the Bears scored six of the contest's next seven goals and took its 7-5 lead when
Alyssa Studdert scored on an assist from Goss with 8:58 to go.
Kennedy Mason started the Bears' run with an unassisted goal with 12:04 to go in the third quarter before Studdert assisted
Mya Wang less than a minute later with 11:17 remaining in the third for the first of their two connections during the run. Neither team would score for the next seven minutes before Goss tied the game at 4-4 on an unassisted goal before Studdert again found Wang with only four ticks left in the period to give the Bears a 5-4 advantage heading into the final period.
Eldredge started the scoring in the fourth by tying the game at 5-5 on an unassisted goal with 14:14 on the clock but the Bears took the lead back less than five minutes later on an unassisted goal by Goss with 9:58 to go before finding Studdert a minute later for the Bears' final score of the contest.
Eldredge finished the contest with a game-high four goals, while Alissa Digiacinto had two, and Smith and Kiley Davis picked up one apiece. Both of Digiacinto's goals along with Eldredge's final tally came on free position shots as the Lions made three-of-four. All eight goals were unassisted.
Goss, Studdert and Wang each finished with a pair of goals for the Bears, while Mason had one. Studdert also had two assists, while Goss had one. Cal was unsuccessful on each of its three position shots.
Callan Fritsch recorded a career-high 16 saves for the Bears, while Sims recorded eight for the Lions.
