CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The No. 21 California softball team made it 10 straight wins with an 11-9 victory over Illinois and a 10-2 defeat of Hawai'I on Friday at the Mary Nutter Classic.
The Golden Bears (12-1) got a pair of home runs from both
Elon Butler and
Kyndal Todd in the two games and 12
Randi Roelling strikeouts in the win over the Rainbow Wahine.
Game 1: Cal 11, Illinois 9
The Bears jumped out early and often, building an 11-1 lead.
Tianna Bell hit a 2-run shot in the second, the first of three 2-run home runs in the frame as Todd and Butler followed.
Kaylee Pond came through with the bases loaded, slapping a 2-run single to put 11 on the board for the Bears.
Illinois wouldn't give up, scoring three runs on four hits in the fifth to close within 11-6. The Illini added three more in the seventh, but Roelling came on with the tying run at the plate and got a flyout to end the game. Â Â Â
Game 2: Cal 10, Hawai'i 2
Acacia Anders got the Bears on the board in the first, lining an RBI double to the wall in left center. Bell made it 2-0, Cal, with a sac fly to right. Roelling was dominant in the circle from the first pitch, not allowing a Hawai'i hit until the fourth.
Cal added to its lead in that fourth frame, scoring three runs, the big one on Butler's second 2-run shot of the day.
Lagi Quiroga and Todd both clobbered 2-run homers in the seventh as Roelling struck out six straight batters who came to the plate to put the game away.
