Cal Splits First Day In Lafayette

Bears Beat Chattanooga, Fall To No. 21 Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. – The California softball team opened the Louisiana Classics with a split on Friday at Lamson Park, defeating Chattanooga 13-6, before dropping the second game 8-0 (6) to No. 21 Louisiana.

The Golden Bears (2-1) were led by two hits apiece from five players, including a grand slam off the bat of Mika Lee in the win over the Mocs.

Game 1: Cal 13, Chattanooga 6
The Bears jumped on top early, scoring four runs in the first on a 2-run double from Kaylee Pond and a Hope Alley 2-run single. Starter Annabel Teperson was effective early, allowing just a solo home run through three frames.

Lee kept her early-season hot streak going, crushing a grand slam in the third, less than 24 hours after the junior hit her first-career home run at McNeese on Thursday night. With Cal leading 10-1 in the fourth, the Mocs got to Teperson with an RBI double. After a walk and a fielding error, Ryann Orange made her Cal debut in the circle and got out of the inning.

Acacia Anders came through with an RBI single in the sixth and Diamond Holland placed a 2-run single into right field as the Bears built a 13-4 lead heading to the last of the seventh. Orange earned the win after going three innings while allowing two runs on two hits.

Game 2: Cal 0, No. 21 Louisiana 8 (6)
Freshman Randi Roelling got her first collegiate start in the circle in front of a hostile crowd and showed why she was a highly-touted recruit for the Bears. The lefty handled the pressure against a veteran Ragin' Cajun lineup and stranded a one-out double with a strikeout to end the first.

With Cal trying to get its bats going against Louisiana's No. 1 starter, Sam Landry, Roelling allowed just two hits through the first three frames. The Cajuns finally got on the board in the fourth with an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead.

Landry continued to keep Cal off balance offensively and a 2-run double in the fifth made it 3-0 for the home team. Haylei Archer came on in relief after two singles to start the sixth, before a third base hit and a walk, followed by a grand slam, ended the game.

UP NEXT
Cal returns to Lamson Park for day two of the Louisiana Classics and another doubleheader, beginning with an 11:30 a.m. PT first pitch against Chattanooga and a 2 p.m. PT start vs. New Mexico.
