BERKELEY – The No. 17 California softball team dropped the Big Series opener to No. 6 Stanford, 7-0, on Friday at Levine-Fricke Field.  Â
Tatum Anzaldo and
D'Auna Johnson each recorded a hit for the Golden Bears (21-5, 1-3 Pac-12). NiJaree Canady threw a complete game with 11 strikeouts to earn her ninth win of the season for the Cardinal (20-5, 1-0 Pac-12).
Facing the top pitcher in the country who came into the game with a 0.47 earned run average and 130 strikeouts, Cal struggled to get its bats going throughout the game.
Anzaldo singled in the third for the Bears' first hit of the day and
D'Auna Johnson recorded an infield single in the fifth as Cal couldn't get anything going in the box.
Anna Reimers got the start for Cal and gave up a 2-run double in the second before retiring the next 11 Cardinal batters in a row. Stanford got it going again in the sixth however, forcing Reimers out of the game after back-to-back singles. Â
Haylei Archer came on in relief before Stanford added five runs on four hits in the frame.
