Turner Soars To Program Record
McCorkle, Carney Record Additional Program Top 10s
SACRAMENTO – California track & field recorded 12 top-three finishes and three new entries on the program's all-time top-10 lists on the first day of the Hornet Invitational, continuing the outdoor season in fine fashion after a two-week break from competition.
Senior
Amari Turner provided the top highlight of the meet, taking sole possession of Cal's outdoor pole vault record after posting a winning clearance of 4.32m (14-2); she had previously shared the program mark with alumna Lauren Martinez. She was joined on the podium by classmate
Kylie Hilton, who placed third at 4.05m (13-3.5). The other women's field competitors also found great success, with freshman
Myla Canty claiming second place in the triple jump with a mark of 12.63m (41-5.25) in her outdoor debut; meanwhile, at the hammer cage, Cal went 1-2-3 in the standings courtesy of sophomore
Audrey Jacobs (63.36m/207-10), freshman
Adrianna Coleman (59.32m/194-7) and junior
Destiny Okoh (57.54m/188-9), the former of which set a new Dutch U23 record and the latter of which was a personal best by nearly two meters.
Over on the track, the Golden Bear women made a strong statement as nine runners set personal bests. Sophomore
Georgia McCorkle was Cal's first competitor in the distance events, placing third in the 3000m steeplechase; her time of 10:30.92 moved her up from ninth to sixth in program history. Junior
Aysha Shaheed posted a wind-aided time of 23.74 to win the 100m contest, with six of her teammates (led by senior
Ryan Lacefield's fourth-place 23.88) recording PRs in the event. Senior
Claire Yerby and freshman
Addie Johnson closed things out for the women with new personal bests in the 3000m, respectively placing fourth (9:41.11) and ninth (9:52.99) in the field.
On the men's side, it was sophomore
Caden Carney who recorded Cal's third program top-10 entry, racing to a winning time of 8:12.57 in the 3000m to rank ninth on the Bears' all-time list and crush his old PR by over 24 seconds; senior
Carrick Denker also excelled in the event with a third place 8:13.86, while junior
Isaiah Shaw led the way for Cal in the 200m with a personal-best time of 21.36.
The Bears claimed the top-two spots in the men's hammer, which was shortened due to a lack of sunlight, as senior
Michael Gupta took first with a mark of 62.89m (206-4) and classmate
Ivar Moisander trailed just behind at 62.87m (206-3). Closing out the field events were freshmen triple jumpers
Obi Nwafor and
