No. 18 Bears Split Doubleheader With Utah

Haylei Archer Records Complete-Game Shutout In Victory

SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 18 California softball team split a doubleheader with Utah on Friday, falling 7-4 before taking the nightcap, 1-0, at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.

Haylei Archer threw her third complete-game shutout of the season for the Golden Bears (26-9, 4-7 Pac-12). Julia Jiminez had a pair of RBI to pace the Utes (18-15, 2-9 Pac-12).

Game 1: Utah 7, Cal 4
The Bears jumped out in front in the second inning, scoring three runs on a wild pitch and a pair of sacrifice flyouts from Lagi Quiroga and Kyndal Todd. Haylei Archer got the start in the circle and was strong through three frames until the Utah lineup got its bats going in the fourth.

The Utes got on the board with a 2-run single, making it 3-2 as Cal went to Randi Roelling out of the bullpen with two runners on and nobody out. Two more run-scoring hits from the Utes put the Bears in a 6-3 hole heading to the fifth.

Tianna Bell got a run back with an RBI single, but Cal couldn't get anything else going as Utah took the opener that was rescheduled due to inclement weather on Thursday.

Game 2: Cal 1, Utah 0
Cal got the only run of the game it needed in the fourth when Quirgoa laced an RBI single on the 11th pitch of the at-bat to make it 1-0. After throwing 291 pitches the week prior and 59 in the first game of the day, Archer took the ball again and made the pitches when she needed them.

The senior from Columbus, N.J. stranded the potential tying run in scoring position in the fourth and sixth innings, before making the game-saving play in the seventh. With a runner at third and just one out, Archer got a groundout to third for the second out. The second pitch to the next batter got away and Archer covered the plate as Quiroga put a throw right on her glove to tag out the Utah runner at the plate and preserve the 1-0 victory.
