Caisa-Marie Lindfors crossed the 200-foot mark for the first time in her career.
STANFORD – California track & field's
Caisa-Marie Lindfors is no stranger to big performances, having appeared at the 2023 World Athletics Championships this past summer as the reigning discus champion and earning Cal's indoor shot put record earlier this season. On Saturday, she added another eye-popping mark to her résumé, winning the women's discus invitational section at the Stanford Invitational with a personal-best throw of 61.44m (201-4) that shattered Kelechi Anyanwu's 17-year-old program record by 3.86m (12-2).
Lindfors' first throw of 58.88m (193-2) would have already marked a new program best; she improved to 59.57m (195-5) on her second attempt before posting her top effort in the competition's final toss.
"Caisa was outstanding today," assistant coach
Mohamad Saatara said. "It's always nice to open your season with a PR."
The Golden Bears' throwers also had stellar outings in the women's collegiate hammer and the men's shot put invitational sections. In the former, all five of Cal's entries made the final, eventually sweeping the first four spots. They were led by senior
Kay Racine, who spent the entire 2023 season sidelined due to injury but announced her return to the collegiate hammer scene with a decisive win at 59.11m (193-11), improving her mark on all six of her throws. Freshman
Adrianna Coleman followed with a second-place 57.35m (188-2), just ahead of junior
Destiny Okoh's third-place 56.94m (186-9).
"Kay has been very diligent in practice and is putting together some great work – today, it showed in her performance," Saatara said.
Rising star
Nick Godbehere, who redshirted in his first year at Cal, put together another standout performance in the shot put with a second-place throw of 18.43m (60-5.75), beating his old PR by nearly a foot. Senior teammate
Jeff Duensing stayed right on his heels, taking third place at 18.38m (60-3.75).
"Nick is a great young talent for us and is working very positively toward his objectives for the season," Saatara said. "I am very proud of this team and I look forward to their achievements throughout the year."
Two other field athletes – freshman
Jeremiah Bolaños and redshirt freshman
Will Siemens, recorded new personal bests in their respective events. Bolaños reached the collegiate triple jump final with a huge PR of 14.90m (48-10.75), increasing his outdoor career high by over a foot to finish fifth in the competition, while Siemens raised his pole vault PR to 4.77m (15-7.75).
