BERKELEY – The California baseball team led 2-0 heading into the top of the seventh when Arizona started its come back. The Wildcats scored two in the seventh, a run in the eighth, and two more in the 10th to take game one of the three-game series 5-3 on Friday night at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Cal (16-11, 5-8 Pac-12) got a tremendous pitching performance from reliever
Luke Short. Short entered the game in the top of the second after opener
Austin Turkington worked a scoreless top of the first. Short went 5.1 innings, scattering two hits, two runs, one earned with two walks and five strikeouts.
Defensive miscues plagued the Bears late. A dropped infield pop-up allowed the Wildcats (15-13, 8-5) to start their 2-run rally in the top of the seventh. Arizona got its second runner aboard when
Max Handron lost a pop-up in the lights in shallow left field, putting two on. That ended the day for Short.
Back-to-back wild pitches from relief pitcher
Jake Guardiancic tied the game up at 2-2.
Tyler Stasiowski (2-1) came into the game in the seventh and got the Bears back into the dugout.
The top of the eighth was a wild one. Arizona scored the go-ahead run on a walk, a wild pitch and a throwing error that allowed Richie Morales to score from second. Stasiowski once again got the Bears out of a jam and limited the damage to a single run.
Caleb Lomavita led off the home half with a double to right center. A deep fly ball by
Rodney Green Jr. moved Lomavita to third and he came around to score on a double by
Peyton Schulze.
A quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth by Stasiowski got the Bears back in the dugout. Cal looked to earn its fourth walk-off win of the season, getting two aboard, but Wildcats relief pitcher Casey Hintz (2-1) ended the threat by getting Lomavita to ground out sharply to first.
In the top of the 10th, Arizona opened the inning with a double to right field by Mason White. Garen Caulfield doubled to left field to score White from third and Brendan Summerhill singled to center field to score the insurance run.
Tony Pluta earned the save, pitching around a one-out single by Schulze to preserve the 5-3 lead.
Stasiowski tossed 3.0 complete, allowing two hits, three runs, two earned with two walks and two strikeouts.
Offensively, Cal had plenty of base runners. The Bears collected 10 hits on the evening with Schulze and Green collecting two apiece.
Jarren Advincula went 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. Cal's struggles came with runners in scoring position. The Bears went 2-for-13 in those situations and left 10 runners on base.
The Bears look to even up the series Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
