Wildcats Take The Series

Advincula Extends Hitting Streak To 18 Games

BERKELEY – The California baseball could not get the hit it desperately needed, going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position as Arizona took game two of the series 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Stu Gordon Stadium.

Cal (16-12, 5-9 Pac-12) finished the afternoon with seven hits but was held scoreless for the first time in 2024. The Bears had opportunities all afternoon but were hitless with runners in scoring position and 2-for-12 with runners on base. PJ Moutzouridis and Caleb Lomavita both went 4-for-4 on the day. It was the 13th multi-hit game for Moutzouridis and the 15th for Lomavita. Jarren Advincula extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a single through the left side in the bottom of the first inning.

Arizona (16-13, 9-5) got a tremendous pitching performance from starter Cam Walty (5-1). Walty went seven strong scattering six hits with no runs allowed and no walks while striking out eight.

The loss went to reliever Trey Newmann (0-4) who went 3.1 innings allowing seven hits, four runs - three earned, with a pair of walks and a strikeout.

The Wildcats had five runs on 11 hits in the series-clinching win but would need just the solo home run from Emilio Corona. Corona led off the top of the fourth inning pulling a first pitch breaking ball over the left field fence for his sixth home run of the season. That same inning Richie Morales singled to center field that scored Xavier Esquer from second for the insurance run.

The Wildcats scored two more in the top of the sixth on a throwing error by Lomavita and a sacrifice fly from Morales. Logan Piper entered the game with runners on the corner and one out. He did an excellent job stopping the bleeding by getting a strikeout and a weakly hit ground ball to strand the runners.

Christian Becerra went the final three innings for the Bears and was brilliant. He allowed just one base runner to reach, via a walk and recorded a strikeout.

Dawson Netz came into the game for the Wildcats in the top of the eighth and held the Bears scoreless. The lone blemish on his afternoon was a two-out single from Peyton Schulze. Max Handron also had a hit.

Before the start of the game, Cal welcomed back the 1974 team for its 50th anniversary. The Bears also had the official unveiling of the Brad Brian Gates at the entry to Stu Gordon Stadium.

The Bears look to avoid the sweep on Sunday. First pitch for the finale is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
