BERKELEY – Tatum Anzaldo recorded four hits and the pitching staff allowed just two runs as the No. 20 California softball team swept a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount on Saturday at Levine-Fricke Field.
The Golden Bears (29-10) took game 1, 6-0, before prevailing 3-2 in Game 2 against the Lions (16-18).
Game 1: Cal 6, LMU 0
Haylei Archer continued her recent run of strong starts in the circle for the Bears, getting the start and not allowing a hit until an infield single in the fourth inning. It was a pitcher's duel until the home half of the fourth frame with LMU ace Jenna Perez going toe to toe with Archer.
Cal finally broke through when pinch-runner
Holly Medina raced home on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 heading to the fifth inning.
Tianna Bell extended the Bears' advantage in the fifth, breaking through with a two-out RBI double to knock Perez out of the game.
Insurance came in the sixth for Cal when
Acacia Anders drove in two runs with her 17th double of the season and Anzaldo laced a 2-run single through the right side to put the Lions away. Archer earned her seventh win as
Ashanti McDade came on for the final three outs.
Game 2: Cal 3, LMU 2
Cal got back to its home run hitting ways in the second game of the day, taking a two-run lead in the second inning when
Elon Butler crushed her conference-leading 12th home run of the year.
Mika Lee drove in the other run when she found the gap for a two-out, RBI double. Anzaldo gave Cal a 3-0 lead in the third with a no-doubt shot way over the fence in right field, her second of the season and 13th-career long ball.
Randi Roelling kept the lions off the board until the sixth when they scored two runs on three hits to make it a one-run game heading to the seventh. McDade came in for the seventh inning for the second time in as many games and earned her second save of the season with the final three outs. Roelling notched her 10th win to go along with seven strikeouts.
