3 Bears Qualify For NCAA Championships
Lechno-Wasiutynski, Silva, Stepanov Will head to Orlando in November
STOCKTON -Â After completing play at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, three members of the California men's tennis team -
Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski,
Tiago Silva and
Timofey Stepanov - have clinched their spots at the NCAA Singles and Doubles ChampionshipsÂ

Kris Kwinta praised the team's performance after the tournament, saying, "It was a great tournament for the Bears. We qualified three players, so it was a very successful trip for the Bears. I'm really happy with everybody's performance. There were a lot of lessons learned but still a lot of things to adjust because it's a never ending learning process. I think we are going in the right direction and looking forward to sectionals."
Lechno-Wasiutynski, a sophomore, reached the semifinals on Sunday after defeating players from Saint Mary's, Gonzaga, Portland and Santa Clara. Seeded sixth in the tournament, Lechno-Wasiutynski went on to upset second-seeded Vlad Breazu of Oregon 7-5, 6-2 and clinch his spot in the NCAA Singles Championship. With a singles record of 8-1, he heads to the M25 Harlingen, Texas, which is an ITF pro tournament starting Sunday. Â Silva [4] also reached the semifinals of the singles draw, but the senior fell short to Washington's Soham Purohit [8] 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.Â
In the doubles draw, Silva teamed up with Stepanov, a junior, on the doubles side and advanced to their second final of the season. Silva and Stepanov, who were the top seed and ranked seventh in the country, defeated teams from Washington, Santa Clara, Oregon and Stanford to reach the final. Meanwhile,
Bernardo Munk Mesa and
Paris Pouatcha defeated teams from Pacific, UC Davis, Stanford, Portland and Washington to reach the final as well. The all-Cal final took place at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley on Tuesday, when Silva/Stepanov defeated Munk Mesa/Pouatcha 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 to qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship.Â
Freshman
Winston Lee continues to shine, finishing the tournament with a 4-1 singles record and a 2-0 doubles record alongside junior
Alex Aney. At the same time, Pouatcha builds on his strong results at the Sherwood Cup, finishing regionals with 3-1 singles record and a 5-1 doubles record.Â
