FULLERTON – The California softball team split their doubleheader, defeating Oregon State 6-3 and losing to Cal State Fullerton 9-3 .
Game 1: Cal 6, OSU 3
Togia ignited the scoring in the opening inning, launching a solo homer over the left field wall to give the Bears an early 1-0 advantage. Oregon State answered later in the frame with an RBI single to right field to even the score at 1-1.
Cal regained control in the third inning. Gator Robinson delivered a two-run triple to put the Bears back in front, and Togia followed with an RBI single to plate Robinson and extend the lead to 4-1.
After two scoreless innings, Kayli Counts added insurance in the sixth with an RBI single up the middle, pushing the margin to 5-1.
Togia continued her hot stretch at the plate in the seventh, homering for the third time in two days to extend the Bears' lead to 6-1 entering the bottom half of the inning.
The Beavers mounted a late push with a two-run homer, but the rally fell short as Cal closed out the 6-3 win.
Tamya Waiters (1-4) earned her first win of the season, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing one run on seven hits. Mya McGowan recorded her first save of the season.
Game 2: CSUF 9, Cal 3
Cal capitalized early, scoring three unearned runs in the opening frame to jump out to a 3-0 advantage. The Titans answered in the bottom half with a solo home run, trimming the deficit to 3-1 after one inning of play.
CSUF evened the score in the second, plating two runs on a single and a fielder's choice. The Titans carried that momentum into the fourth, taking their first lead of the game with an RBI single to right-center.
The breakthrough inning came in the fifth, when Cal State Fullerton erupted for five runs to extend its lead to 9-3.
The Bears (7-14) close out play at the Judi Garman Classic on Sunday with a matchup against East Texas A&M University.
