BERKELEY— The California baseball team suffered its first series sweep of the year Sunday falling to No. 15 North Carolina 10-2 at Stu Gordon Stadium.
The Golden Bears' longest losing streak of the season was extended to four straight games as they fell to 13-7 overall with an 0-3 record to start their second ACC campaign. The Tar Heels (17-3-1, 4-2) left the Bay Area in great shape winning their fifth straight contest.
UNC opened up the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning and followed that with two runs in the third, three more in the fourth, and one in the fifth to jump out to a 7-0 lead. The Tar Heels made their weekend on timely hitting, scoring 10 runs with two outs and that was no different in the series finale as they scored four of their runs with two down.
Gavin Eddy (3-1) earned the start for the Bears and was charged with his first loss of the season in his shortest outing. The sophomore tossed 3.1 innings and gave up four earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three.
Senior
Cole Clark followed Eddy out of the pen and was effective in 1.2 innings of work. He had ones across the board allowing one run on one hit with a walk and a punchout.
Cal avoided its first shutout of the year with
Hideki Prather collecting an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth. The Bears' catcher went on to collect the team's first extra-base hit of the game, doubling in the seventh before being replaced by
Tyler Leroy who homered in the bottom of the ninth.
The Bears got good production from the bottom half of their lineup with their five through nine hitters each collecting a hit including freshman shortstop
Jett Kenady who went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Cal will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday when it hosts UCONN in the final game of this homestand. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. on ACCNX.
